Description

The 30th Special volume of the international series, Recent Advances inPediatrics, through its 34 peer-reviewed chapters contributed by 52 experts, aims at updating the target audience on current status, recent advances, and future perspectives in neonatology. Part 1, kickstarting the contents, incorporates three excellent “In Focus”
chapters on Changing Trends in Neonatal Care, Advocacy in Neonatology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Neonatology. In Part 2 on “Delivery Room Issues”—are dealt with such important topics as golden hour management for improving preterm outcome, and practice of delayed clamping of the umbilical cord. Part 3, “Intensive Care”, covers three noteworthy topical issues, i.e., Psychospiritual Applications in NICU, Parental Support in NICU, and Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC). The deliberations have a special emphasis on the settings in India. In Part 4, on “Neurology”, neonatal seizures, neonatal pain, neuromonitoring, and retinopathy of prematurity are skillfully discussed. Part 5 (Hematology) presents a thought-provoking update on neonatal
bleeding which, if not treated in time, may prove disastrous. Neonatal hypothyroidism receives an excellent coverage in Part 6 (Endocrinology). Part 7, on “Infections”, incorporates a superb chapter on neonatal sepsis.
In Part 8, on “Growth”, is carried an exhaustive state-of-the-art chapter on intrauterine growth restriction.
In Part 9 (Nutrition), we have three superb updates: Enteral Nutrition in Premature Neonates, Complementary Lactation Management Centers, and Feeding the LBW Infants. xiv Preface Part 10 (Diagnostics) presents two very informative chapters on neonatal echocardiography and neonatal screening. The precious illustrations, displayed in abundance, are bound to be of great help to the readers in understanding the nuisances of echocardiography.
Part 11, on “Therapeutics”, dwells on very relevant issues, including the Therapeutic Hypothermia: Relevance in Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy and Erythropoietin in Anemia of Prematurity, Antenatal Corticosteroids in
Preterm Births. The chapter on understanding neonatal pharmacology should prove very useful in optimizing benefits of pharmacotherapy in clinical practice. Part 12, “Congenital Malformations”, incorporates an interesting chapter on Antenatally-Detected Hydronephrosis. Finally, in Part 13, “Medicolegal Issues”, we have an apparently off-the-track but very relevant and timely chapter on Medicolegal Issues in Neonatology which at times haunt the Neonatologists/Pediatricians. Advancements in neonatal care with new technological gadgets and equipment have led to remarkable hike in survival and reduction of morbidity. Unfortunately, it has also been accompanied by medicolegal cases. Care at the age of viability, intact survival, and neurodevelopmental complications are basis for allegations from parents or relatives. This chapter shall be of great help in prevention and handling of such issues.

As many as 34 peer-reviewed, evidence-based, and state-of-the-art chapters contributed by 52 experts review the depth and breadth of knowledge in contemporary neonatology with future perspectives with special reference to the Indian subcontinent. The contents are stimulating, mature and, at places, provocative for encouraging further discussion, research, and innovation. The book with a multidisciplinary approach in a holistic and easy-to-grasp manner provides an academic feast.
Mercifully, it contributes to the Recent Advances in Pediatrics (RAP) series goal of translating advances in the field from benchside to bedside, nay to the community at large—the ultimate beneficiary of the endeavors.
